All this…for a bit of geometry.

I’m quite enjoying the mental gymnastics required to take a physical three-dimensional form and construct an unfolded plan of the form using Grasshoppers interface. A little clunky at times and I know that I’ve gone the “manual” route, but something about crawling before you run…

So all this:

The upper “red” is the Grasshopper generated form (a lot of ghosting points are currently hidden). The lower form is the “baked” Final Cut (blue) and MicroPerf (magenta) segments which can now be lazer cut (they are lines, grouped and layered at baking, and are “in” Rhino not in Grasshopper).

The baked lines were extracted from Grasshopper from the following two gather components, grouped in red. Note the two sliders which are set to 1. These are the functioning variable aspect to the tile, at this stage.

Here one slider has been shifted, in this case the X-axis variable. It causes the center cut box to move within the fixed four-by-four tile. The interior box, through the slider parameters, is bound. Meaning that it can not leave the fixed tile.

Screen Shot 2013-02-03 at 10.50.31 PMNote the adjusting “base” planes (trapezoids). When the interior box is shifted these planes parametrically respond; moving the “throat” tabs (one-by-two rectangles closest to the grouped red “X-es”) to align with the interior box.

I have begun to work on a tile thickness variable. To date I have not parametrically linked the throat-tab depth to the existing tile-thickness sliders. Those sliders and there effect on the form are seen in the following two images.

The last aspect to finish will be to design the vertices which will define the vertical parameters of the geometric form –a pyramid in my hand-cut iterations. These will be placed along the line (not previewed in this screen capture) located between the red X-es.
